While actual steam is too dry and hot for proper carpet cleaning, hot water extraction is recommended by carpet manufacturers and professional cleaners. This method involves the application of hot cleaning solution deep into the carpet fibers, followed by immediate extraction with a powerful vacuum. As it removes more dirt and contaminants compared to other methods, hot water extraction is endorsed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC).

However, pet odor can penetrate multiple layers, including the carpet backing, padding, and even the subfloor. To eliminate the odor, each affected layer must be treated or neutralized. In some instances, a urine neutralizer may be applied.
For severe cases, replacing the carpet padding and treating the underside of the carpet and sub-floor may be necessary. Please note that even carpet replacement cannot guarantee complete odor removal.
